The Tall Dark Man Behind The Music
Music Producer Onyx Johnson, former rapper and singer, is currently a student at Atlanta Metropolitan State College, polishing, perfecting his craft and gaining an overall knowledge of mass media. The Minnesota native found his way to Atlanta and has worked with the likes of Lil John and The East Side Boys, Twista, and Psycho Drama. Johnson has produced five albums and currently manages two groups and two solo artists. We sat down recently to talk about where he is now and where he wants to go.
Q: You have worked with a many artists. What experience have you gained the most from thus far?
A: Working with DJ Quik taught me a lot at a young age. He told me my rap style was wicked and had me do his theme song for his weekly radio show in California. I watched him mix a song that I was featured on with one of his artist. He can also read music. He inspired me to take my music production to another level.
Q: What types of projects are you currently working on?
A: Currently, I’m working producing singles for different artists that I think are talented. I’m also developing a rap group and two singers under my management company.
Q: You started producing music at the age of thirteen. Who or what got you started and where do you see yourself in five years?
A: My uncle got me started in the music industry. He has a musical background and started taking me to the studio. He introduced me to music. Within five years, I aspire to open a media production company providing promotions, videos, and marketing. Services will be available in-house and for hire. I will have a full staff of graphic designers, animators, and musical artists. I basically got tired of putting
out money and decided to learn the various things I needed to do to have my own company. I created avenues and revenue to save money. For example, I use my videography and photography skills to produce commercials. I currently have an account with Comcast where I can broadcast the commercials.
Q: What about family?
A: I am an only child but have a big extended family. When I was growing up I played a lot of sports and was very involved in the community.
Q; Do you have kids? Do you want kids?
A: No kids yet, but I do want them.
“In the next five years I will open a media production company.” says Johnson. With a solid musical foundation, Johnson continues to shine, pursue his goals and utilize his past and present experiences to advance.
